Chronic pain, from fibromyalgia to stress headaches and migraines, is the leading cause of disability in the United States according to National Institutes of Health. Unlike acute pain which alerts you to an injury, such as a broken bone or touching a hot surface, chronic pain can last for months or even years. The most common forms of chronic pain are: low back pain, headaches/migraine, neck pain, and facial pain. The causes are often hard to pinpoint, leaving many feeling depressed, anxious, struggling with sleep, chronic fatigue, and unable to function normally in their daily lives at work or home.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest those suffering from chronic pain, headaches, and migraines talk to their doctor about managing their pain without drugs due to their lack of long-term efficacy and side effects risk.
Neurofeedback is growing in popularity for just this reason. It is a non-addictive, non-invasive, painless method to relieve the symptoms of chronic pain. With neurofeedback, you improve your ability to self-regulate. With better regulation, stress decreases and pain from fibromyalgia to migraine headaches lessen or disappear.
The Better Brain Center’s own research study on migraine treatment using neurofeedback was published in the medical journal Behavioral and Brain Functions in Feb 2010. Of the 54 clients in our studies, 70% experienced at least a 50% reduction in the frequency of their headaches. And the results appear to be lasting. In addition, most of our clients report the pain severity decreased by at least 50%, resulting in decreased need for medication along with reduced frequency of headaches.
